What most people do not know

Dear visitor
As Peak oil is obviously of your interest, I am sure that you know already what most people do not know or do not want to know. However it is important to let our friends know about those things, although the information is not pleasant at all and most probably not to their liking.

Apart from the food production (see my previous post) as you know oil is the basis for close to almost all things produced. Below some info from a British Newspaper

  • A reduction of as little as 10 to 15 per cent could cripple oil-dependent industrial economies. In the 1970s, a reduction of just 5 per cent caused a price increase of more than 400 per cent.
  • Most farming equipment is either built in oil-powered plants or uses diesel as fuel. Nearly all pesticides and many fertilizers are made from oil.
  • Most plastics, used in everything from computers and mobile phones to pipelines, clothing and carpets, are made from oil-based substances.
  • Manufacturing requires huge amounts of fossil fuels. The construction of a single car in the US requires, on average, at least 20 barrels of oil.
  • Most renewable energy equipment requires large amounts of oil to produce.
  • Metal production - particularly aluminum - cosmetics, hair dye, ink and many common painkillers all rely on oil.

Of course there are many more things that include some kind of a dervative from oil

Dear blogger,

Could you speak a little about the Venezuelan situation regarding oil matters? Similar to Mexico, maybe?
Thanks. Best regards, Laura
